"It's an amazingly early time. It's unheard
A rare North Atlantic right whale was spotted with her calf off the coast of Plymouth on Sunday. It is the earliest sighting of a right whale in these waters on record.
Scientists were heartened that the whale was familiar to them. It is the same whale they had struggled to free from fishing netting in 2010.
Normally right whales reach northern waters off Cape Cod in April and last year there was an early sighting in March. A January sighting is unheard of according to Charles Mayo of the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies.
